#5 - Strategy is the art of the possible

Building a company means keeping a direction while responding to opportunities that never arrive exactly as planned. In this short Friday-night update, Kasper explains why computerlove.tech will miss an internal product deadline—and why that does not mean the company has stopped moving forward.

Hello everyone and welcome to Ship the Diff episode number 5 I guess.

  2. 00:06

So it's late at night, it's Friday.

  3. 00:09

Me and Christian have had a workshop and I'm on my way home.

  4. 00:14

Normally we have them in working hours but today we had one from 3 o'clock to 8 in the evening.

  5. 00:24

So that's just great, Friday evening.

  6. 00:26

So I'm going home to my family now and I've been having a pretty nice week.

  7. 00:32

I've had one day in Aarhus, one day in Copenhagen and yeah, it's just great.

  8. 00:42

Really a lot of things going on at the moment.

  9. 00:44

We're having a lot of workshops, we're also having a lot of other interesting stuff coming up in the future.

  10. 00:52

More to tell about that in the future.

  11. 00:57

Yeah, and I've been talking a lot about this product we're developing and we are definitely developing that.

  12. 01:04

But we are also struggling with prioritizing time for developing it.

  13. 01:09

And we have actually internally set a deadline for launching it.

  14. 01:15

    Monday I think?

  15. 01:17

We're not going to hit that one.

  16. 01:23

    We need to postpone it.

  17. 01:27

But also, you know, in many ways I've learned that all this business stuff is actually, you know, it's...

  18. 01:37

I really like this term, an art of the possible, right?

  19. 01:43

    Det muliges kunst.

  20. 01:44

    It's called in Danish.

  21. 01:47

And it's really, that is really true, you know, because, you know, there is your vision, your strategy, everything you imagine that you're going to do and your plan.

  22. 02:00

    And then there's reality, right?

  23. 02:04

And opportunities, they just emerge, right?

  24. 02:10

And sometimes you have a plan to do something, but opportunities emerge.

  25. 02:18

And it's sort of like on strategy, but not entirely how you imagined it.

  26. 02:26

But you have a good feeling that it will move you forward, right?

  27. 02:31

    Towards something, some direction, right?

  28. 02:39

And that is kind of like happening right now.

  29. 02:41

We're still really, really strong releasing this product and everything, but, and also doing it.

  30. 02:46

But it's really dark here, I hope you can, like, hear me at least.

  31. 02:53

    So, yeah.

  32. 02:55

The important thing, I guess, is that you're not just doing random stuff, right?

  33. 03:00

Just saying yes to random gigs, random customers, wanting to do all sorts of stuff.

  34. 03:06

But you're saying yes to the right things.

  35. 03:08

That is kind of like getting you in the right direction.

  36. 03:13

Even though it was kind of like not what you expected, but you still have a good feeling about it.

  37. 03:21

And feel like that it will maybe open up doors for future opportunities.

  38. 03:29

Or at least, you know, just be able to position you more favorably than just doing random stuff, right?

  39. 03:40

And we're kind of like there right now, I feel.

  40. 03:43

And I think my dear co-founders would agree.

  41. 03:48

I need to make a video with Christian, introduce you to him soon, actually.

  42. 03:52

    He's a great guy.

  43. 03:54

Look forward to, you should look forward to meeting him.

  44. 03:58

    Yeah.

  45. 04:00

And then this week has also been about, you know, because Christian is, he has, he's a co-founder

  46. 04:07

in this company and another company called North5.

  47. 04:10

And we are, yeah, we are, you know, collaborating and, yeah, having also plans on collaborating more

  48. 04:19

    in the future.

  49. 04:20

A lot of, there's been a lot of, you know, it takes work, you know, to figure out how to

  50. 04:26

    collaborate.

  51. 04:27

And there's been a lot, there's been a big topic for this week.

  52. 04:30

And also, we have actually been out in Danish city or I don't know what you call it, but

  53. 04:39

    yeah, a city called Herlev.

  54. 04:42

    It's pretty close to Copenhagen.

  55. 04:44

And looked at an office, you know, actually at an office building where we have,

  56. 04:49

it's basically an office with a, two rooms and a small kitchen.

  57. 04:57

    That's an entire floor, right?

  58. 04:59

And we were out looking at that company with North5, the other company that Christian is

  59. 05:08

    a part of.

  60. 05:10

And I've basically decided to say yes to actually renting that space, right?

  61. 05:16

So we're actually going to have a space right now, right?

  62. 05:18

And the only thing that maybe worries us the most is that if we're going to use it or like

  63. 05:27

if we're on the road so much that we're actually not going to hang out there.

  64. 05:32

But yeah, let's see how it goes, right?

  65. 05:35

So, but we're pretty exciting to, that we have actually just today said finally yes to our office space.

  66. 05:45

    That's pretty cool.

  67. 05:48

And it's actually a really cool place.

  68. 05:50

The top of the building, an older building actually.

  69. 05:55

    An entire, you know, floor.

  70. 05:56

I guess I'm going to give you a tour when we kind of like get it up and running.

  71. 06:03

    So, yeah.

  72. 06:05

And also, yeah, just been busy doing stuff.

  73. 06:13

I have a little bit forgot to record Ship the Diff until now on my way home late in the evening.

  74. 06:21

And I'm alone with the kids all weekend because my wife is going to work.

  75. 06:27

So I won't be having time to record there.

  76. 06:30

So, yeah, just did it right here.

  77. 06:35

    Great.

  78. 06:36

But I think that was the update for this week.

  79. 06:39

I hope you have a great weekend and look forward to seeing you next time.

  80. 06:45

    Bye.
